Women’s Day celebration 2014 – Kanakakunnu

8th March, 2014 was a memorable day for the women of Kanakakkunnu. We celebrated the International women’s day with the theme “Inspiring change for Empowerment”. Women’s equality has made positive gains but the world is still unequal. International women’s day celebrates the Social, political and economic achievements of women while focusing world attention on areas requiring further action. Inspiring change encourages advocacy for women’s advancement everywhere in every way. It calls for challenging the status for women’s equality and Vigilance inspiring positive change. The venue chosen was St. Jude Parish hall at Kanakakunnu . The day began at 9.30 am with a rally from Kanakakunnu city to the parish hall of St. Jude.

As the rally moved towards the destination the women were calling out slogans, such as women are powerful weapons in the family. God has created women with a special gift of creation. A woman is the light of the house. Women have the capacity to endure the pains and sufferings. She is blessed by God with Love, patience and forgiveness etc…About hundred women and few young girls participated in it. Few of them were dressed like Our Blessed Mother, Indira Gandhi, and Bharthamatha in order to show the power of women in the world. This added more colour to the rally. It was very well arranged and they played their part very well. As soon as the rally reached the parish hall, we started the meeting. It began with a Prayer song invoking the help of God. Rev. Fr. Sebastian Kochupurakal, Executive Director of HDC Idukki Diocese, our ward member Mr. Baby Kanjirathamkunnel and Rev. Sr. Superior Regina Varghese were welcomed to the stage by M C, Mrs. Ancy and the welcome speech was given by Mrs. Achamma.

After the inaugural address and felicitations the women performed a skit and sang songs on the issues of women. Sr. Mary Scaria the animator of the group spoke to the women on the theme. The safety of the women is the safety of the future. Women who are able to recognize the glory of womanhood only can proclaim love to the world. Our Blessed Mother Mary is the model for this; she was an agent for this love proclaimed to the world. She is a model for all women, a mother who is able to help us. She faced every situation with dignity and courage inspiring change for empowerment. She showed it from her birth to her son’s death. Kumari Alphy thanked everybody.
